About the Event

  • Join us at RISD to explore the remarkable journey of Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, a trailblazing artist born in 1890 to Narragansett and African American parents.

  • Prophet made history as RISD's first documented graduate of color in 1918 before moving to Paris in 1922, where she gained critical acclaim for her figurative sculptures despite facing financial challenges.

  • During her 12 years in Paris, Prophet's work not only garnered recognition but also contributed to the cultural landscape, highlighting her resilience and artistic vision.

  • In 1934, she returned to the U.S., co-founding Spelman College's art program and continuing to create impactful sculptures until her passing in Rhode Island in 1960.

  • "Nancy Elizabeth Prophet: I Will Not Bend an Inch" is organized by the RISD Museum, situated on the ancestral homelands of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, a heritage Prophet proudly claimed.

  • This exhibition honors Prophet's legacy, celebrating her contributions to art history and recognizing the ongoing importance of amplifying Native voices and histories in our communities.
